Level Boss.

We had a break first, for something to eat. I started a fire, and pulled out some food supplies, whilst Arturo and Jinsu collected the remaining heartstones. There were a lot of them. Roxanne’s team had said they weren’t really worth collecting, against the deeper level ones they already had, so we had the spoils of her massive lightning attack spell.

Only then did I remember I hadn’t asked her about that one. Never mind, plenty of time.

“There’s no way the other teams are going to beat us this time,” Arturo said, plopping himself down by the fire. “We’ve collected another three hundred and twelve stones, just from this encounter alone.”

“Go our team!” Samantha said, punching the air. “By the way, we really should find a name for us.”

“How about The Slayers?” Arturo said. “Because we slay.”

“We were the ones that were nearly slayed,” Jinsu pointed out. “And we look rather like drowned rats just now.”

“Maybe the Mut Rats then?” I suggested. “A little self-depreciation often goes down well.”

“Mud Rats eh?” Arturo tapped his chin. “Yes, I like it. Gets my vote.”

“It fits our description I suppose. Very well.” Jinsu nodded.

“It’s not a strong name, but then it could make our rivals underestimate us,” Samantha added. “And, strategically, that could be a good thing. I say yes.”

I looked at Crow, who grunted, but nodded too.

“There you have it then,” I said. “We are the Mud Rats.”

“Go Mud Rats!” said Arturo. “Yes, it works.”

The name of our group settled, we concentrated on having a break and something to eat, taking it in turns to consume the meat and vegetable stew, heated up over the fire I’d made, which we cooked in a pot that had been stored in Arturo’s bag. Two of us patrolled the perimeter, taking it in turns to watch out for any further attacks.

Happily, our break went unmolested, and so we all felt better later on, ready to carry on with our exploration.

“Any particular direction Theo?” Jinsu asked, once we were all packed up and ready to go.

I shrugged. “What does everyone think?”

“Without any real information it’s hard to say,” Arturo said.

“Well, Roxanne said there was a swamp to the south,” Samantha pointed out. “I’m muddy enough, so… not south.”

“Can’t argue with that.” I nodded and looked around, using my newly acquired internal compass. “We’re been coming from the east so far. Roxanne said the main exit was to the west. So, maybe head north west?”

Jinsu nodded. “Fine by me. Any objections?”

There were none, so we headed away from our blood-coloured camp. The fog faded some as we went on, whether it was because of the area or it was just dissipating I wasn’t sure, but either way it allowed us to see a little further, which was a good thing.

The ground sloped slightly up, and, whilst there was the odd bushy plant here and there, it was mostly hard, although still not dry, mud. At least it made walking easier.
